I'm a librarian who loves anime, manga, and reading a wide variety of genres.
The main character is a 15-year-old boy named Koichi. So much stilted first person POV. For example:
"The effects of the pleural drainage were going according to schedule, and on my third day in the hospital, the pain had pretty much subsided, too. The problem that arose then was sheer boredom." (19)
So far, I prefer the anime that's based on this book, although it'll be nice to see what sorts of things were cut out.
One very fitting line: "How something affects the group is more important than the individual." (35) I'm looking forward to the moment when Koichi messes everything up.
