I'm a librarian who loves anime, manga, and reading a wide variety of genres.
The second half of the book is much more enjoyable than the first. It's probably because I'm primarily in this for the dinosaurs.
Anyway, the variety is wonderful. We've had multiple T. rex scenes, multiple Dilophosaur scenes (those are the poison-spitters, which are 10 feet tall in the book - only small in a relative sense), territorial pterodactyls, a few baby dinos (I was worried about the baby Triceratops, but Crichton let it live), and more.
