Gal Friday/Girl Friday

Offensive or no? This is in relation to the book I just finished, The Friday Society. The "Friday" part is a reference to Robinson Crusoe's "man Friday." I haven't read Robinson Crusoe, but a female superhero group (basically) with a name that references "gal Friday" and the girls' positions as assistants to better known/more powerful men doesn't sit right with me.
