A friend of mine saw my review of Hello, Please!: Very Helpful Super Kawaii Characters from Japan and pointed me to this video. Matt Alt talks about youkai, the necessity of understanding Japanese culture when translating Japanese, and the "working characters" covered in Hello, Please.

The little bit about his wife's name being listed before his on their youkai book was a bit odd, especially since it's not consistent across all their books - I just checked, and his name is definitely listed before his wife's on Hello, Please. Still, it's a very interesting interview. I'll have to try their book about youkai sometime.
